It is with sad reluctance to announce the death of someone I served with in Iraq during the 2005-2006 deployment to Iraq. Sgt. John Rogers of Arizona, 26, died in Afghanistan on June 30, 2010.
Rogers was an infantryman in 3rd Platoon in the Angels from Hell. He served in Korea for a time before joining the Rakkasans shortly before our deployment. He always was one of the good ones, and had a sense of humor that fit well with so many, me included.
Shortly after our return from combat in 2006, Rogers seperated from the military like me. We talked a few times about the things and people we missed, and I wasn't surprised when he ran away from civilization and returned to the 101st Airborne Division in 2009. I always joked with him that he did the right thing, as I was back-door recalled and sent back overseas with people not of my choosing. I'm glad he returned to the 101st, to continue to bring the fight overseas. It was exactly what Rogers loved and stood for.
He was always particularly close with, sadly, many of those already deceased from Angel Company, all from 3rd Platoon. I find strength that he's got one heck of a reception in heaven with his old comrades, Kemple, Miller, and Subarton, upstairs waiting for him...
... with a shot of Jack.
